The return of Mohammad Javad Ashrafi to the presidency of the Khuzestan Department of Environment Protection has once again sparked a wave of protests among environmental activists in the province. He, who was known during his previous term for increasing environmental problems and inappropriate interactions with rangers, has now returned to his position due to pressure from industrial companies.
A Dark Record of Ashrafi
Ashrafi dismissed one of the leading rangers, Baqer Mousavi, in 2020 due to his criticisms, an action that was heavily criticized by environmental activists. This action and other similar actions have portrayed him as a manager who not only neglects environmental preservation but also seeks to suppress his critics.
Receiving bribes from industrial companies, many of which are responsible for environmental destruction in the province, has led to multiple crises in the health of Khuzestan citizens. This ultimately resulted in his dismissal, but now, under heavy pressure from the managers of these companies, Ashrafi has returned to his position.
This return raises many questions about the transparency and integrity of the province's management system. Are public interests truly a priority, or do economic and political pressures play a key role in these decisions?
