US officials announced that this network used shell companies and businesses based abroad to transport sanctioned Iranian oil. This action is one of the largest sanction packages against Iran's shipping sector and aims to disrupt the financial and logistical network of Iran's oil exports. Scott Bassett, the US Treasury Secretary, stated that the Shamkhani network is one of the most profitable financial engines of the Islamic Republic.
The US Treasury Department sanctioned several individuals and companies, including Mohammad Reza Rahbar Madani, Hossein Ghorbani Zahed, and the companies Glavos Shipping FZCO and Dezra Shipping FZCO. These companies provided financial and maritime transport services for the Shamkhani network. Additionally, shipping companies active in Singapore, Dubai, Hong Kong, India, and the Marshall Islands were part of this network.
Impacts and Consequences
These actions expand previous sanctions against members of the Shamkhani family. All assets and financial interests of the sanctioned individuals and entities in the United States are blocked and must be reported to the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). US laws generally prohibit American citizens and companies from dealing with sanctioned individuals and companies, unless authorized by OFAC.

Tensions between the US and the Islamic Republic have increased over the past week, ending a fragile ceasefire established based on a memorandum of understanding in June.
