A Harsh Winter for Petrochemicals; Gas Supply Crisis is on the Way

With damage to four gas refineries and a reduction in gas refining capacity, the country faces a significant challenge in supplying winter gas, which could lead to feedstock limitations and reduced production in petrochemical industries. Plans to restore capacity by this winter are underway, but energy consumption management remains critically important.

A Harsh Winter for Petrochemicals; Gas Supply Crisis is on the Way

Saeed Pak-Sarasht, Director of Integrated Planning at the National Iranian Gas Company, stated in an interview with "Shana" that more than 70% of the country's energy needs are met through natural gas. He added: "Last winter, we faced a daily gas imbalance of 250 to 300 million cubic meters on average. During the third imposed war, four of the country's gas refineries were damaged, and at one point, about 230 million cubic meters of the country's gas refining capacity were taken out of circulation daily. When the total daily gas production of the country is less than 900 million cubic meters, losing such capacity is very significant and affects winter gas supply."

Gas Capacity Restoration Plan

Pak-Sarasht explained: "The plan is to reintroduce about 75 to 80 million cubic meters per day of this capacity in four early restoration phases by this winter and early next year." He emphasized that the full return of the damaged capacity is time-consuming and requires at least two to two and a half years to return to pre-attack conditions. Therefore, this winter, in addition to the usual gas imbalance, the shortage caused by damage to gas facilities will also overshadow the country's gas supply situation, and consumption management will be more important than ever.

Impact on Gas-Dependent Industries

The important question is what consequences will the damage to these four gas refineries have for gas-dependent industries, especially petrochemical complexes? The reduction in gas refining capacity could lead to feedstock limitations for petrochemicals and a decline in petrochemical product production. This issue could affect the production and supply of petrochemical products and requires precise planning for resource management and energy consumption.
