Workers Victims of Chlorine Leak at Arvand Petrochemical; Safety Crisis and Silence of Managers

The CA unit of Arvand Petrochemical, known as the chlorine, caustic acid, and sulfide unit, needed a complete line replacement almost five years ago. However, delays in replacing these lines have often led to chlorine leaks, resulting in repeated damage to the lungs and respiratory and digestive systems of the workers.

Despite the petrochemical's negligence, since March 2025, Arvand's managers have not only ignored the condition of the affected workers but have also taken no effective action to treat them. While the main fault lies in the lack of necessary safety, the influence of these petrochemical managers has led to a 30 to 40 percent fault ruling against the workers, without any clear evidence being provided.

Common Policies in Mahshahr Special Zone

According to labor activists, this is a common policy of companies and contractors in the Mahshahr Special Zone. Technical experts also emphasize that due to the high possibility of chlorine leaks, companies have not replaced the lines in a timely manner, leading to similar incidents. Considering this, contracting companies and petrochemical managers deliberately use day laborers for repairs in this section to reduce their liability.

Collusion and Administrative Corruption

The collusion of medical groups and health departments of companies with petrochemical managers and labor department managers has resulted in workers' complaints being left unresolved due to the influence and bribery of petrochemical managers. This has led to protests and dissatisfaction among workers who believe that amidst the gears of administrative corruption and lack of safety, their lives and health are at risk.
